Conwy: The Story of a Medieval Masterpiece in 500 Words

Standing guard at the mouth of the River Conwy, the town of Conwy is one of the most magnificent and best-preserved medieval fortified towns in all of Europe. Its story is one of military might, architectural genius, and enduring Welsh character, all dominated by the colossal stone presence of its world-famous castle.

Founded in 1283 by King Edward I of England during his conquest of Wales, Conwy was built as a key part of his “iron ring” of castles designed to subdue the Welsh. The entire complex – the formidable castle and the protective town walls – was constructed with breathtaking speed, largely completed in just four years. This remarkable feat of medieval engineering was designed by Master James of St. George, the foremost military architect of the era, and today, both the castle and the walls are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The town walls, stretching for nearly a mile (1.3 km) and punctuated by 21 towers and three gateways, are among the finest in existence. Walking along their ramparts offers stunning views of the town, the estuary, and the dramatic landscape of Eryri (Snowdonia) beyond.

Within these walls, the town’s layout remains remarkably faithful to its 13th-century plan. Narrow streets are home to historic buildings like Plas Mawr, an exceptionally well-preserved Elizabethan townhouse, and Aberconwy House, a 14th-century merchant’s house now cared for by the National Trust. And, of course, there’s the quirky charm of the Smallest House in Great Britain, tucked away on the quayside.

While built as a symbol of English dominance, Conwy quickly developed its own unique Welsh identity, becoming a bustling hub for trade and maritime activity. Its historic quay, once filled with fishing boats, now welcomes visitors who come to admire Thomas Telford’s elegant Suspension Bridge and soak in the timeless atmosphere.

Today, Conwy is more than a historical relic; it is a vibrant town where centuries of history live alongside a thriving community. To visit Conwy is to step back in time and witness a stunning example of medieval power and planning, a true masterpiece on the North Wales coast.
